SHarecon Report

First of all, the two family members I lost over the weekend have been cremated together and they are forever united now. Thank you again to everyone who was great emotional support over the weekend. It was very much appreciated.

And I guess that means it's time for the SHarecon report. It's like a tradition now, do the con report exactly one week from the time I left for con. Okay, so I'm MAKING it a tradition :P Since the con was more low-key this year, the con report will reflect that (yeah, there's no way this is going to be as long or detailed as my Shoreleave report)

Thursday: Jen drove us up and the DC/MD drivers managed NOT to kill us, even though they tried really hard. When I got to the hotel and was checking in, I had a delayed nervous reaction to the close call. But there were fangirls in the lobby and many welcomes! :) After unloading our stuff in the room (and tantalizing Jen with OMG REAL PORN BOOKS) we went back down to the lobby and hung out with everyone. And even though we were doing the con dinner at Outback on Saturday night, we upheld my pre-con tradition and had dinner at Outback Thursday night too :D Grabbed Lenore and it was back to the room to hang out. Then back to the lobby to hang out. See a pattern here? Everyone was tired, so it was an early night.

Friday: Started the day at IHOP. First day of con! Registration, wandering around seeing people, picking up two of Keri's latest zines (and my trib copy of Marion's zine)...zine buying was over for the rest of con. Sad, huh? But I got to peruse the charity auction stuff and then the art show. OMG! Suzan did an older guys piece! It's AMAZING! And Elaine and I put in a good faith effort at bidding on it, but my bid was tripled, therefore taking it to auction. I hung around the peripheral of the panels until my 1PM (Keeping the Fandom Lively), which was great fun. Our fandom is love :) Gen panels went poof and then I played SH Jeopardy. Our team lost, but a valiant effort! Plus, I got a toy snake that I love. Pepper knows more than any of us can imagine :P Season Four love panel and then it was luau time! Best food spread ever! Kudos on the tuna salad and the pretty, pretty SH cake. Peripheral hanging out, then the podfic panel at 9PM which was great fun (I hope more people will do podfic...let me know if you have questions), but it was during that panel when I kept interrupting everyone with my phone ringing. Embarrassed and apologetic, I didn't realize until I checked the phone afterwords that it was my family calling me to let me know that my great aunt and uncle had passed away in a car accident. Obviously, my night was over right there. Cried alot in the room, in the shower, in the room again...lots of crying. Set the laptop to start downloading Shrine and went to bed.

Saturday: As a pick-me-up to help me start my day, I watched the Shrine with earphones on trying not to wake up Lenore and Jen. Yes, this was what I picked to cheer myself up. Really, I needed to cry more is what I was telling myself. FANTASTIC episode, really got my day started right, but the family loss was going to overshadow the rest of the weekend. Lots and lots of great people offered their support over the weekend and, again, much appreciation for that. The distraction of the con helped take my mind off of it for bits of time. Again, started the day at IHOP (cried again in the bathroom there), back to the hotel (cried in the bathroom and the hallway), and decided to sit with Lenore at registration to flip through some scrapbooks of the boys while listening half-way to the canon/fanon panel. Torino Races! I won the first round, then lost out in the finals. However, I got a cool Fire Island piggy bank tin which now holds my change. Going straight from that into the Love Ages Well (older boys) panel. YAY! We love our older boys ALOT. Did the roundtable with writers where I found out I'm NOT the only one who can't write to a strict outline. I'm not alone, woo! Sat in the Charity Auction even though I didn't bid on anything (since I own half of it...that's a good thing, right?) And then it was Outback time. I love me some prime rib, lemme tell you ;) Finished dinner and came back for a hilarious rendition of SH Baaaaaad Theatre (where I got a blue water wiggler that will forever be known as a detachable penis;), the Art Auction (where I had convinced myself that I could go $100 over my previous planned final bid...and got outbid before I even had a chance to SAY anything), and the vid show where my Remember When vid once again got much applause and my DeadStarsky video was....okay, so I killed him, sorry. Back to the room, bedtime.

Sunday: Breakfast time at the IHOP. Mine was the first panel of the day, 10AM about Livejournal. After some technical difficulties, we got rolling and had a very good panel that covered a variety of subjects. More people should be on LJ! I tried my hand again at SH Jeopardy and once again got beaten, but it was fun! Plus, I got a second toy snake so now the two of them can be in love :) For about an hour after that I wandered around and came back in time for my 1PM "It's Not Canon, But It's Mine" panel which covered not only things we see for our own personal canons, but also how we write in particular universes and how we write in general. Then it was the Dead Dog panel where there weren't too many complaints and over to Pasta Plus for our now-traditional end of con dinner. Late night eps and then it was time to turn in.

Monday: Guess where we ate breakfast? GUESS! Yes, IHOP. It's that good :D And then back to the hotel for a round of sad goodbyes and hugs and back on the road to North Carolina. It's over? How can it be over? It came and went way too fast. Two more years to wait.

And in conclusion, Happy Birthday, David Soul!

Thanks for the report, and I'm sorry about your relatives.

And I'm wondering, this would be a very bizzare coincidence, but since I've had weirder ones actually happen to me, I have to ask, did your great aunt and uncle have a grandson who works for a radio station on Long island? Because if so, he works with my brother.

I'm...not sure. All their children moved North, so it's possible? Did he lose family members in North Carolina?

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss ... and the juxtaposition of learning about it when you were in con!mode.

OTOH, I have never eaten at an IHOP, but they are famous as fangirl eating/gathering spots for decades (well, at least two, I think).

I agree that more peeps should be on LJ. = more fun and sharing. And can I pout: you have two outer space penises wigglers!!!

Warmest hugs,
H.

Dear Kim,

I'm so sorry to hear about your Great Aunt and Uncle. I didn't realize you had suffered such a loss last weekend. My empathic abilities are pretty pathetic; I noticed you seemed a little quiet and the idiot in me assumed it was SGA related (yes, I can be that shallow and can attribute it to others).

I enjoyed last weekend, and you were a major reason why. I always enjoy listening to what you have to say. Your talents and gifts put a smile on my face. I learn so much from you, whether it's from attending a panel you're leading or just listening as you add to what is being said. You add a lot to this fandom, and you add a lot to my enjoyment of it. Thank you.

And, hey, I'm on LJ...that shows your power. Use it for good.
Elaine

I always love seeing you, too :) You're fun and lovely and it's a treat to get to hang out with you. The con was a wonderful distraction and we both put in a good faith effort on that art, huh? Next time! Next time!

So Sorry

Kimberly, I'm so sorry for your loss. I hadn't heard at the con. If I had I would most definitely have delivered the cyber hug I'm sending now in person.

oh I'm so sorry about your aunt and uncle! God it's just been one of those years, huh? Everyone I know has lost someone this year, it seems.

Shrine is... a very hard episode to watch after losing someone, at least it was for me. My dad passed a week before I watched it on Scifi, and I just broke during it because towards the last week, HE was acting like McKay did due to medicine issues until they sedated him.

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss. :-( That's very tough. Especially when you're away from home. *hugs*

SHarecon sounds fun. I kinda wish I can go someday. Maybe next year. I don't live *that* far away. Well, closer than you do. But still, would take me a while to get there. A few hours.

I'm saddened to hear about the loss of your family members. :-(

But I'm glad you had a good time at the con. :-) And, oddly enough, I knew exactly what you were talking about when you were asking for the name of the water wiggler, but I didn't know either.

And "The Shrine" was just frakkin' *amazing*. I love David so much more for that episode.
